The Kite Runner

1) Role of Women- The women are in the background. they are subservient to their husbands and they seem to be given less oppurtuiy then their husbands. Such as men can have two wives and women can't openly question their fathers like men can.

2) Betrayel- Amir is the betrayer. The book shows that betrayel is nothing but what a coward does. amir is guilty of this in two accounts, One was not helping Hassen and the other was when he accused him of stealing.

3) Brothers- the book says that their is a certain brotherhood between men who have drunk from the same breast. This is what Amir and hassen did. The book speaks very strongly on this subject.

4) Guilt- Amir had the hiden guilt and it caused him alot of pain but when he realozed that Ali and Hassen bothknew he was grateful at least.Soraya told Amir of her past and she was cofoted by telling him. The open guilt is far less painful.

5) Redemption- Amir receives redemption at the end and the book says that it is important it can be very good for the soul.

6) Exodus/Journey- The book shows that it is hatd for Amir and baba to leave their entire life.It shows their loss and also it shoes death. this is when Kamel dies of fumes from the truck and his father kills himself.

7) Fathers and sons- The fathers hope their sons will turn out just like them such as Baba hoping for Amir. the sons like Amir are just wanting their fathers attention. It shows that fathers and sons are different then mothers and daughters and they can openly discuss issues and they just want relationships between each other.

8) Class Distinction- The book shows a distinct difference between to very differnt type of people Hazaras and Pushtans. the Hazara are the mongul descendants and servents to the elite and wealthy Pushtans.

Parallelism- In the story parallelism is used when Amir is telling how he makes the kite.

Character foils- baba and Rahim kahn are character foils because while baba dosent listen to Amir Rahim Kahn dows. He is like a father to him when Baba is not. He encourages Amir in his syories while Baba makes fun at them. Rahim Kahn is evrything Baba is not.

Hassen and Amir are character foils because while Hassen is encredibly loyal Amir is not. Hassen is very fast and athletic but Amir is not. Hassen is the son Baba wants and Amir is the son Baba got.

Forshadowing- The author uses this alot is his book. He alwyas seems to speak using it. Such as when Amir says that this will be the last Kite Hassen would run for me. Also before you find out Baba has cancer the author says that Baba was coughimg and has the sniffles. It forshadows something bigger to come.

Flashback- The whole book up until 2001 is a flashback of Amirs life anditswritten as such. The forshadowing is closly encorporated in this because Amir has already experienced it. All Amirs experiences are in this noval the good and the bad.

The books biggest positive is that it shows kobul and afgabistan in a new way. It shows how it always wasnt the war orn country we all thought it was. It helped me look at it in a new light. The negative of this reading is that its a harsh reality gripper. It brings out issues of death and rape and loss that are very shocking. Although it offsets this by Amirs marraige to Soraya and his adoption of Sorab.

Setting
The Muslims have five daily prayers they say.
Their is a big distinction beween Hazaras and Pushtans.
Kobul has its big kite tournament thats like our Aerican Bseball.
The Afganschool year is different then Americas. They look forward to winter not Summer.
Afganistan at this point is still very primative. No T.V. and they have very few makes of cars.

Minor Caracters
Assef- The embodiment of evil in my opinion. He is half German and half Afgan. He loves Hitler and he rapes Hassen. He seems to have some control or fear inti his parents.

Kamal- he is one of assefs friends. He like Wali dosents agree with raping Hassen. he later dies after he succumbs to fumes in the fuel truck and his father kills himself.

General Sahib- He is Sorayas father. He loves his daughter very much and went to get her from her drugee boyfriend when she ran away from him. he approves of their marraige and is good friends with Baba.

Ali- Ali is Hassens father and babas friend. He serves them like a sevrent and is babas oldest friend. he is Baba's Hassen. His face is paralized and at the end we find out he wasnt really Hassens father.

Jamila she is Soraya mother and very close to her daughter, they talk often. She has a stroke that paralizees half her body when soraya runs away. she likes Amir and wants them to be married.

Symbols
Blue kite-Hassens loyalty for Amir.
The Journry- loss, death.
Assef-the future of Afganistan.
Pomagranate Tree- Amir and Hassen relationship.
Kite Running- A piece of Afganistan.

So anyway I'm halfway done with my week and looking forward to the Haunted House this week although last week there were problems and someone was treated very wrongly and she shouldn't have been but what can you do when a high school girl gets involved when she shouldn't have. That's taught me that High School still rules the world. It's quite ridiculous and very retarted. Anyway it will be a great weekend and the House it awesome so come and check it out.Well gotta go cya l8r.

How T.Vs changed

Tyler Logue
Professor Aiken
English 1101
19 October 2009

I remember sitting down when I was in elementary school after a long day of school and homework and watching cartoons. My favorites were Looney Toons, Tiny Toon Adventurers’, and Animaniacs. I made sure to be there before they came on so I wouldn’t miss a second of them. Back then the cartoons were simple. You had Bugs Bunny who would show up get into trouble and then get out of it. Then you had Babs and Buster Bunny who would show up and do the same thing but it would still be hilarious. The cartoons were violent but not in a need to censer your child way but in a way to laugh at. You had a couple of sexual innuendos but not many and the shows were always making fun of actors or the previous decade. My favorite scene would have to be when Bugs and Daffy would argue and daffy would end up messing up and getting shot however he didn’t die he just got mad and stalked off with no beak. It showed a less violent side of cartoons and of the world. Also there were the classic Disney shows like The Jersey and The Famous Jett Jackson. Those were the good old shows of the nineties. However as time passed things would change.
Now today when my brother comes home from school he watches a whole new set of shows. The generation that was born in the late Nineties didn’t get to see shows like the Smurfs and Tiny Toon adventures but now they have Phineas and Ferb and anime and other shows of those sorts. They also have a new modified Disney channel. They also have stronger and more obvious sexual innuendos and rougher violence. It’s not enough that the oldies are gone but now you have them trying to remake them. Shows like Batman and Superman are being remade and they look stupid and the dialogue is annoying. What children are being exposed to now is a worse influence from cartoons that are supposed to be funny and give them an essence of childhood. I hate that my brother is missing out on that classic, funny, and clean television. I guess I know how my parents feel.
What I’m trying to say is that television has changed quite a bit, although it’s not a complete horrible change. The shows are still funny and some of the newer comedy Is more logical then it was when I was a kid.Instead of hitting someone with an anveal out of nowhere they walk in the street and get hit by a bus. It seems to all fit. Now most shows are trying to teach a big life lesson. Shows did a few years ago but they were smaller and less common life lessons. There is also another very big thing that hasn’t changed. A large grouping of shows are still stupid and have no point. There are more now but I remember shows like Freakezoid and My Little Pony that just didn’t have a point in life. Now it’s shows like Chowder and Flap Jack that just shouldn’ t exist because they are the biggest insults to T.V. Don’t even get me started on reality T.V.
So television was great back in the day, and I still like it heck I love it, This essay has made me nostalgic for the old Television shows of the ninties. You just couldn’t go wrong with Bugs Bunny making people feel horrible about themselves. This is how my older cousins and parents must have felt when I was a kid, that I was missing out on great T.V. Altogh a lot ogf great shows did carry over from the eighties to the ninties. There is just a new group of kids on the block and they need to be made happy. In the end it’s all up to each person to decide when the shows were better. I’m just sayng it was in the ninties.

My Essays

So the Descriptive Essay wasn't that bad. It was one of the few essay I actually enjoyed because it allowed me to tell a story as well. It wasn't a hard paper to write but I did have a little writers block but other then that I liked it. Normally they aren't that fun but what I discribed made it fun. The exemplification essay was a little tougher but I liked my topic although I did want to develop it more but it's kool because it was a good one anyway. I'm hoping for a B. Oh and my Descriptive essay was really in my opinion good because I made up an entire college. I'm not stuck on myself just proud of the essay. So anyway it was fun but the exemplification was more what I considered to be work. The hardest thing about the essay was well honestly that I procrostinated so long. See if I wait to long then it gets bring and I can't focus. So that's why this essay was harder then the other.

This week

Let's c fall break starts soon and that means no class on thursday. Then on Friday and Saturday I have the Haunted House again and it will be awesome. It worked out great opening night and I can't wait till this week. What else oh yeah I have a history midterm tmro and then I have to study for a math exam that's next week. It could be worse. What else I really think thats as far as my life goes this week. So cya l8r.

Why Church goers aren't perfect.

Tyler Logue

Professor Aiken

English 1101

23 September 2009

Why church goers aren’t perfect.

Every Sunday two groups of people exist. Those who are in church, and for whatever reason, those who aren’t. Then in the group that is not in church more divisions can be drawn. Those who want to be in church but can’t, and those who don’t want to be there in the first place. His group seems to think similarly. Those church goers are perfect people who don’t do anything wrong. Church goers seem to have the best lives and be all happy and lively. The people who attend church have their own pressures and deal with everyday life just like everyone else. Although certain types of churches influence this thought and make it seem untrue. Such as when someone attends a church for the first time and the preacher seems condemning and judgmental. This can greatly effect if that persons goes to church again.

The reason I love my church in particular is because my preacher shows how imperfect he really is. Such as one time he was speaking at the pulpit and he said that no one is perfect especially me. He said he had his fair share of mistakes and that he was nowhere near perfect. That’s the side of church goers that is not seen that much, although it should come out a lot more. Another time I was a church talking to one of the respected men and he told me that everyone makes mistakes in life, and that we shouldn’t dwell on them. By talking to people at my church I learned that I didn’t’ have to be perfect and that no one is. This in particular is something that I struggle with.

I noticed I was making a lot of mistakes and I was judging myself very harshly. So I started by talking with my preacher about it and he gave me examples about himself and others and I realized perfection wasn’t possible even for a church goer. No one has to achieve perfection because it’s vastly overrated. If we were perfect we could never evolve as people because there wouldn’t be any mistakes to learn from. For instance if I was perfect then I would be at a constant level but since I make mistakes I can change and grow from them and make sure I don’t make those same ones again. Basically perfection isn’t worth the sacrifice that we would make for it.

At the end of the day we are all in the same boat church goers and those who don’t go to church. People I know who don’t go to church make the same kinds of mistakes as those people I know who go. Not just that but personally I would be nothing without my mistakes and neither would anyone else. Our mistakes actually define us as people, not each mistake personally but the wide range that they are, and our wanting to stop those mistakes from happening again. I’ve made the mistake to tell peoples secrets and that makes me untrustworthy, but I have the ability to repair that and that yearning to make myself better is what defines me. Church goer or not on the end we are all the same.

What was my greatest challange writing my paper ?

My greatest problem writing my paper was most likely writers block. I wasn't sure how to develop a huge college campus and then have people interact on it. Once I started writing it slowly came to me but then another problem arouse how much detail do I need to add? I didn't want to overload it but I didn't just want to say there were buildings and people either. So thats how the setting arouse as a beautifule Blue Ridge campus. Some times though that was hard bc I have never seem the Blue Ridge area so it was kind of a shot in the dark.

I did like being able to comment on others blogs and try to give them some feedback because I believe it was helpful. I liked the feedback on mine a well because they told me some things to do in my final draft. The blog is a great tool bc it's an indirect way to tell people what they need to work on. Its helpful and reliable. I hope the comments on the next essay are just as helpful.

Sep/15

Today our final drafts are due and I think mine is an A. I'm hoping that at least. So let's see I also have a doctor's appt today. I really hate the doctor. Also my second class is basicaly cancelled for today bc we have a job fair and all my classes for tmro r cancelled. I think it's a great week and I hope it gets better and better. I really like the college life and everything about it but I can't wait till I can transfer to GCSU. So what else can i say, it's weird that i am normally a chatterbox but i can't think of much to say in a blog. Anyway I guess that's all so cya l8r.

Although I have a little bit of homework to do and another essay to write It's gonna be a fun day. I  am going to go with a few friends today and audition for that haunted house downtown. I'm real excited about that.  Labor Day weekend was great I hung out with some friends, got to see my G-Momma, and got a lot of homework done.  Pretty productive weekend if you ask me and not that boring. Well hey Mrs. A is starting her class so guess what i gotta go cya.

First Day of College

There it was right in front of him. Celeb Hawthorn pulled into the parking lot and stepped out of his Midnight Blue Mustang. It had been a Graduation present from his parents the following May. He looked around and on all sides and saw the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. At their peaks fog was settling. He got his backpack out of the Stang and proceeded up the parking lot to a large two story brick building. In front of the building was a three tier stone fountain with an angel holding a scale. Water was pouring out of each side of the scale and it was perfectly balanced. Around the fountain were benches made of a sturdy oak and kids of all ethnicities were sitting or standing. Then around them was a large circular driveway done in the signature Georgia clay brick that the entire parking lot was done in. Around the driveway several large vans were parked and kids were exiting them walking in all directions. Those were the shuttles that carried kids from the dorms to the campus and other places. He checked out his watch and realized he had some time to kill before his first class so he thought he could check the campus out. He walked into the two story building, as he did he noticed the sign on the side of the building that was done in large golden letters, it read “Carter Center”. He walked into the building through a set of glass doors and found himself in an atrium of sorts. The ceiling was a large triangular glass dome and a balcony ran the length of the room. Directly in front of him was a staircase to the balcony. Forty or fifty kids walked around the room or sat in seats next to the walls. On either side of him were large wooden doors. On his right side a door was open and he saw into what he guessed was a theater. A man was walking on a stage and the next minute was jumping around on it. He looked to his left across the atrium at the other doors he guessed, by the sounds of instruments being played, that it was a music room of sorts. Caleb decided instead of going upstairs he would keep walking through the building. Then behind the staircase he saw a long hallway that ended at a pair of glass doors. Sunlight was flooding through them. He walked down the hallway it was slightly darker then the bright atrium. There were a lot of smaller and brighter wooden doors on either side of the hallway. Caleb passed several classrooms and noticed that they were mostly History, Literature, or Sociology rooms. “This must be the humanities building” he thought out loud. He got to the doors and walked out and what he saw was breathtaking. There was an endless looking pathway with large green shrubs following the length of it. At the end of it was a behemoth of a building. From his distance he thought it looked like a Greek forum. He began to walk down the pathway towards it. The pathway was made of light stone; almost what he thought was cobblestone. Caleb passed groups of people ranging from three to one back to three and then to five and so on. He got to the large building and realized it was a forum and it wasn’t the end of the pathway. The forum was the biggest thing around. It had about eight steps going around it on all sides. In each of the four corners stood groups of three large whitewashed columns. The roof was a dull green color and made of glass shingles. He walked to the top and up there was tables and chairs and benches made of wrought iron and at least fifty or sixty people. Caleb realized he could see the whole campus. The other building ranged from one to two stories and were made of brick and spaced out over about 12 acres of rolling green hills. To his right were twin two story buildings connected by a glass two story hallway. One building read “Maple Hall” and the other “Oak Hall” in the same golden lettering that was on “Carter Center”. You could see people moving on both floors of the glass hallway. Also too his right between the pathway that connected Carter Center to the forum and the pathway that connected the two halls to the forum was a colorful garden with a statue in the center. Caleb picked out Pink roses, Blue violets and yellow sunflowers. The statue in the center was a copper color and it was faded. He thought it was of a woman but was to far away to see. He turned and looked back straight ahead down the bright stone pathway, lined with the same tall shrubs, at a big two story building with a two story wing on each side. The building looked older than the rest. The clay bricks were faded and that whole side of the campus looked less manicured and cared for then the area where he was standing. On the side of the main building read “The Library” in old faded black letters and on each of the wings was a name. The right one was the Science and Lab Center and the left was the Computer and Math Labs. Caleb saw that the building was built on a hill and at the base of it were several students playing Frisbee and football. Caleb then turned to his left and saw the remainder of the campus. There were two more buildings both looked brand new. One was a long one story building that was named the “Student Social Society” or the (SSS). The other was the tallest building on campus besides the forum. The front of that building was all one story but the back was a tall almost three story building with large oval windows near the top. Caleb saw the sign on the taller part. “The health and Fitness Center”. He decided to check out that side of the campus. He followed the stone pathway. It was curvier then the others. He came to a fork in the road. One way was to the social society and the other way went to the Fitness center. He decided to check out the Social Society first. As he walked down the pathway a breeze came through the valley were the campus was situated. The trees blew in the wind. They reminded him of someone waving. Caleb got to the Society building and stood looking at it. The windows on this building were larger than the others on campus and they seemed to glisten in the sun. The bricks on the building were lighter and made the building look more inviting. He walked into the building and straight into a blue carpeted foyer. Several kids milled about or were sitting in chairs. On his left side were two light wooded doors with big plate glass windows. On one door in big black letters read “Registrar” and on the other in the same type of lettering read “Financial aid”. He looked on his right and saw two more identical doors one leading to the business office and the other to student affairs. Straight ahead of him were four glass doors that lead into a large game room and cafeteria. The game room was on the left and was done in the same blue carpet as the foyer. It had pool tables hockey tables and several big screen TVs. On the right a small modest cafeteria done with modern gold and blue chairs and tables was serving about seven or eight choices of food. He wanted to go to the game room but looked at his watch and saw his first class was starting soon. It was in the Carter Center. He turned to leave and ran into a girl. He apologized and helped her gather her books that had fallen. He looked at her. She had on a black skirt and blouse that looked good with her blonde hair and blue eyes. “Sorry “he said again. “No problem umm... I’m Kara Dawson.” He nodded and said “Caleb Hawthorn” She smiled “Nice to meet you” He glanced back at his watch. “I’ve got a class now but it gets out in an hour would you like to get some food then.” She nodded “Ok see you here in an hour.” They parted and Caleb walked back to the forum. He stood at the top looking all around the large, colorful campus. “I think I’m going to like it at Blue Ridge University” he said aloud.

Sep/3

Ok so here we r at the end of the week. I am ready for this long weekend but not all the homework I have. My grandmother is comming into town and I'm excited to c her. Also for some reason I can't get my USB drive to work on this Mac so I can't put my essay on this thing. However I do have a hard copy so it should all be good and I can post it at home. I hope people like my essay. I really want it to be good. I'm not sure how well I did the assignment though. Anyway I really need to figure out how to access my USB so i gotta go cya l8r.

Why English 1101?

English 1101 I have this class in college as an English requirement. I have to take it but I'm glad I have to. I hope it can teach me to develop my writing style and polish my grammar skills. At this point in time my writing style is way underdeveloped and lacks a little . . . soul i guess. The reason i want to develop it is because i write stories and i would like to start posting them on the net but they need to be fixed up a little. Also this class can help me build up my vocabulary and grammar. I like vocab because I'm good at it. I am going to enjoy this class and the teacher Mrs. Aiken. If things go well maybe I can have her for 1102 as well. Well i am running out of things to say so l8r.
